This twist raises some obvious questions about the fate of the real James Rhodes. As it is, even this assassination attempt may be enough to tip humanity into a major conflict. Had Fury and Talos not arrived to help, the Skrulls surely would have succeeded in framing Russia for Ritson's death, sparking a full-blown World War III. He and Gravik nearly succeed in orchestrating the assassination of President Ritson. And we see in Episode 4 just how much damage the impostor Rhodey can cause with his position. Having an agent in place as the United States Secretary of Defense shows just how far their reach has grown. We know that Gravik and his soldiers have been steadily infiltrating world governments and positions of power. He was removing a major thorn in the side of Gravik’s underground movement. No wonder Rhodey seemed so eager to fire Fury during their meeting. This reveal builds on evidence from the first two episodes implicating Rhodey as a Skrull impostor, particularly when it comes to the antagonistic relationship between Rhodey and Fury in Episode 2. ![]() We also see that Fury knows his old friend is a Skrull when he pays Rhodey a visit under the guise of patching up their friendship. We learn this impostor Rhodey is following Gravik's orders to remove a threat to the insurgency. James Cathedral and is given orders to kill her husband. That twist is confirmed in Episode 4 when Varra meets with Rhodey in St. The speaker denies her request, telling Varra “Yeah, well, you’re talking to me.” That voice sounds an awful lot like Cheadle’s James Rhodes. However, the real shocker involves the voice on the other end of the line. At that point, we’re left to conclude that Varra has been working alongside Gravik this entire time. ![]() After recovering a gun from the safe deposit box, Varra answers the phone and requests a meeting with Gravik. Varra is clearly paranoid about being followed, a reminder that she told Fury she resumed her old life as a spy during the time her husband has been off in space. Secret Invasion: Episode 3 ends with Fury’s wife, Varra (Charlayne Woodard), leaving her home and traveling to a bank to open a safe deposit box.
